Meidiana Kusuma

This time, maybe I should say thank you to Instagram sponsored ad because to be honest I knew this place exist when I scrolled down my timeline and found their sponsored ad one. I informed Anna straightaway and nagged to ask her to come with me to try this restaurant. So, let me take you to Tel Aviv Journey through this restaurant.

It located in Potts Point, totally walkable from Kings Cross station. Make sure to make a booking especially during the weekend because it always jam packed!! I like the ambiance of the restaurant, I felt the cozy and warm atmosphere, oh we got the sitting on the back courtyard.

Beside the ala carte menu, they actually have banquet menu for $60++ per person which I might say it is valuable and you might want to try that one next time. But since last time we were not sure what we would like to eat and a bit full (we had an invite at noodle place right before the lunch booking, lol my bad).

Fresh Hummus, radishes, smoked egg $15

Spanner crab falafel, sweet corn & tahini $6 (each)

Jerusalem Bagel $5

Potato Latke, silverbeet, sour cream & salmon roe $22

Wagyu Scotch Filler $48

Malabi: almond milk pannacotta, orang blossom $13

I might say my favorite dish on that day was the Potato Latke. It was my first time trying something like that, I like the texture when it was still a bit crispy on the outside yet tender and smooth on the inside. The salmon roe on the top was absolutely hit and add the flavor even more.

My second favorite item was the pannacotta, I don't know how they extract that "orange blossom" flavour but I SURE REALLY like it. Even without the topping on the top I bet I still love the texture and the flavour really smooth and refreshing. Never had any pannacotta with this kind of flavor before.

It's been a year since we officially can't travel around freely because of COVID-19, sad, I know! You will never know how MUCH I MISSED book a flight and do all the impulsive and spontaneous trips. As a result, starting from this post I will have one blog series about "pretending" to travel around the world without even leaving Sydney. I called it #roundtheworldSYDNEY. I will go to different restaurant or cafes who serve different cuisine from all over the world. So buckle UP and enjoy the JOURNEY!!

On this first post from the series, let me take you to a narrow street in Hong Kong, around Kowloon area as I will take you to KOWLOON CAFE, Haymarket

Located exactly on the alley between Dixon street and Sussex street, with those vibrant neon signs and all traditional HK hawker food shop front designs. I admit that they have a big range of menu from snack to main dish. It wasn't my first visit so I've tried some of their other dishes already.

On this #roundtheworldSYDNEY time me and my friends visited Kowloon for their snacks, and this time theme was EVERYTHING SAVOURY

Here what we ordered;
Swiss Chicken Wings Mix Instant Noodle $15.8
HK Style Steamed Rice Roll with mixed sauce $7.8
Fish Siu Mai $6.8
Curry Fish Balls $6.8
Red Bean Ice $8.8
HK Style Milk Tea (Cold) $6.8

The HK style milk tea is my must buy item every single time I visit this place, I really love their HK milktea and yes with lots of ice.  I do recommend you to try their steamed rice roll, as for me I already familiar with this Cheong fun since my travel time to Singapore and Malaysia, this one also has peanut and soy sauce in their mixed sauce and of course their curry fish balls.

There is actually another HK famous street food that I really wanna try despite the mixed review, which is Stinky Tofu. I'm not sure on how does it taste but probably want to try that one some day, somee dayy!

SO where is your go to HK cafe in Sydney?

Oh Hi! I know it's been a while since my last post but hey here I am again. Now I'm trying to summarise my current addiction about white rabbit. For those who don't know, White rabbit is a milky candy originally from China and now available in some other flavours like matcha and redbean. Oh! and you are absolutely not crazy if you eat its transparent paper after the bunny wrapper because it's edible (or at least I hope so).
So here you go some of the white rabbit inspired dishes and desserts that you can find in Sydney (disclaimer: some might be not available anymore and some I got from an invite from the place)

1. White Rabbit Ice Cream

A post shared by Meidi (@eatwithmeidi) on Jul 15, 2020 at 11:40pm PDT

Some of you might know my crazy addiction to supermarket aisles. I can spend hours in supermarket and Asian supermarket to explore all those snacks, lollies and desserts. A couple months ago, I WATCHED THIS on Thaikee IGA Instastory and next thing I know, I already in Market City, Haymarket and running to their ice cream section. It was really good, good price and also good portion. I'm not sure about the price now, but it was $9 for 5 pieces of ice cream when I bought it. Just for your information, it is sold out pretty quick, so whenever they are restock make sure you get it to try.

2. White Rabbit Roll Cake

A post shared by Meidi (@eatwithmeidi) on Jul 27, 2020 at 4:47pm PDT

I saw this kind of roll cake for the first time on one of Melbourne Foodie's post. It was a year ago, she posted a cake from @moonshine_au . This year I finally found a similar cake being sold at Bubble nini tea, Central Park branch. Guess what, you know me, I ordered it straight away and voila I turned IIKO's table to my flatlay table (Thanks, Mish). I believe you can still buy the cake in store or contact them first to secure your order. They also have white rabbit cake in a cup version. I like the roll cake better than the cake in a cup version, maybe because on how they packaged the cake but if you want to get more cream in it, I suggest you to try the cake in cup one.

3. White Rabbit DIY Milk Tea

This is just another Asian Supermarket haul. I found these cups at Thaikee IGA, Market city for $2.55. You can also find these DIY milk tea at most Asian Supermarket in Sydney I guess, the price range is $2.55 - $3, yes some other place sell it on higher price. There are 3 different flavours of the White Rabbit DIY Milk Tea, French milktea, Peach oolong milktea and Seasalt cheese milktea. The instruction is actually in Chines, thanks to google translate I got all the directions right. Tips: to make it sweeter pour less water than the suggestion line and I always add on ice cubes.

4. White Rabbit Milk

Milk with "white rabbit candy" flavoured? seems weird? well not really, to be honest the white rabbit candy flavoured is a bit subtle on this milk. It basically just like a normal milk and my serving suggestion, serve it chill to taste the white rabbit stronger. Where to find it? of course Asian Supermarket, I found this for the first time at J&J Asian Supermarket in Mascot.

5. White Rabbit Dorayaki

This is a seasonal flavour from Fujimi Dorayaki. This dorayaki place serves up White rabbit flavour since early 2020 but I just tried this around August, I know I know it's a bit late. The white rabbit flavour is subtle but it is still enjoyable. The flavour called Chucky Creamy Candy and it sold for $4.5 each.

Maybe you won't believe if I said that I already went to this place 5 times for their high tea, one time back in 2018 for the Spring High tea and another four visit alone this year. Well, what can I say, I am truly a sucker for a thematic high tea.

Petal Met Sugar is a small cake, coffee and florist store which never fail to amaze me with their high tee range. It located in Woolloomooloo area and actually can be reach by walking distance from St James station, you can just walk pass the St Mary Cathedral and voila you will reach your destination within 5 minutes.

I wouldn't say it is a cheap High Tea place though, they normally charge people $52 (weekdays) - $58 (weekends) per person with minimum of 2 people per booking. To tell you the truth, my first ever High Tea experience on this place was actually because I won a Giveaway competition via @itd_be_rude_not_to aka Robbie, the second one was for their pretty Winter Zen Garden that allowed me to empty my wallet a bit as I need to paid $52 for each person and the third to fifth visit I got a discount via CUDO for $49 for two people means $24.5 per person, How amazing the difference, huh?

Ok, let's forget about the pricing first and move on to the high tea experience. On this article, you will see me review the Winter Zen Garden and their current Sydney to Amalfi Coast which will be there until February 2020.

Winter Zen Garden High Tea

This was served during winter season 2019, with a Japanese Zen Garden look as the inspiration. On the Sweet Zen Garden tray, we got Eclair (caramelised apple, calavados creme patisserie, choux pastry, sable and microwave sponge), Tiramisu (mascarpone, lady finger sponge, matcha and hojicha tea syrup, popping candy, matcha dust), Garden pebbles (ealr grey tea infused milk chocolate ganache, cocoa nibs, Callebaut elvet white chocolate), Cronut (croissant-doughnut pastry, caramelised salted popcorn, chocolate cremeux, cinnamon sugar), A pond and a tree (Jasmine tea infused panacotta, coconut, Callebaut 54.5% dark chocolate, housemade orange oil fairy floss) and Scones with housemade strawberry yuzu jam, Rodda's clotted cream on the side.

My favorite one from this Zen Garden set was the panacotta, it was so smooth with jasmine infused flavor which made that one really interesting. Ah yeah, I forgot to mention they also put desiccated coconut as the sand and used the real, I repeat the real pebbles which definitely you can not eat.

On my first visit, the fairy floss on the tree was easily evaporated to the air within 5 minutes but on my second and third visit, it was getting better and could stay for more than 20 minutes.

Sydney to Amalfi Coast High Tea

OK let's talk about their newest thematic High tea for this Spring - Summer called Sydney to Amalfi Coast. In my opinion, this theme is funkier compared to the last two themes I have been. In the beginning they will give you a "passport" with an empty photo and the list of the cakes. While they handed you the high tea set, they will also take a picture of you with a Fuji Instax and you can put the photo on the passport afterward.

In the "in-flight menu" on this journey from Sydney to Amalfi Coast, they will serve you six different cakes and desserts on a clear drawer. Where you can try Olive You to The Amalfi Coast (olive oil gelato, caramel, rosemary, toasted pine nut sable), Not Noona's Gnocchi (mochi, strawberry granita, strawberries, basil), Scones (scones, honey mascarpone, berry black tea jam), When Life Gives You Lemons (lemon mousse, lemon and mint confit, chocolate glaze), Cheese and figs (classic cheesecake, fig compote, candied walnut crust, Callebaut velvet white chocolate and Cioccolato Roccia (hazelnut chocolate mousse, hazelnut sponge, milk chocolate wafer glaze, 24ct gold, caramel chocolate).

I had a great experience again and again from this place. This time, I like their Cheese and figs and the Lemon mousse the most. I lobe how they try to serve you with those different texture of cakes and desserts with a unique flavor and pretty presentation. Now, I can not wait what theme will the have after February 2019.

The long wait is over, after 10 years since their opening in Melbourne, finally this Singapore franchise restaurant opened up in Sydney. Located in the heart of Sydney along with their affordable price are their strong points.

I still remembered my first time eating Chicken Laksa and Iced teh tarik at their Killiner Road branch in Singapore, back in 2012. During their media night, me and my foodie friends got an opportunity to try their best dishes. Yess, yess, this belly can not hardly wait.

They provide 2 self service booths to be used for customers who pay by card and for those who want to pay by cash do not need to worry, they also have the normal cashier to help you out for ordering the dishes. The price range at this restaurant is start from $2.50 - $4.50 for drinks, $3.80 - $18 for the snacks and dishes. See? it is really affordable.

We began our Singaporean food feast with Carrot cake, which actually has no carrot in it, eh then what is it? so it actually used white radish as main ingredient. Basically there are two types of carrot cake, black and white. White is the original one and on Black carrot cake they add sweet soy sauce.

We also tried Mee Pok, Combination Horfun, Seafood Singapore Laksa, Prawn har mee, Nasi Lemak curry chicken, Hainanese chicken rice, Chicken satay (you can choose between 6 pcs or 12 pcs) and Roti prata with Rendang Beef. Ok, take a deep breath first because you might confused on what to try first, hey that also happened to me.

Wait, what is Singapore Laksa? so it is a spicy soup stock flavored with coconut milk and dried shrimp and topped with ingredients of your choice (at this joint you can choose between Hainanese chicken, Seafood, Soft Shell crab or Fried fish fillet). Psst I copied all this info from their menu card, hehehehehe.

To be honest, it is kinda hard to choose which one was my favorite dish as I mostly love all them. Their laksa soup was really rich and well seasoned, their chicken satay was really tender and not to mention the authentic flavor of the Hainanese chicken rice and Nasi Lemak. During your first visit, you might want to try their Hainanese chicken rice and laksa, pssst did I tell you they also have Soft Shell Crab laksa? Oh my, that will become my order on my next visit.

Ah, we also tried their famous Kaya Toast and Durian crepes, is there any Durian fans? show me your hand please? hahahah as I'm not a Durian fans I can not tell you how good was the crepes. I love their Kaya toast and the best pair for this toast is actually hot teh tarik, yup don't forget to other this combo.

For the drinks, I tried their Hot and Iced teh tarik, Iced Milo, Iced lemon tea, Lime plum juice, Barley and Grass Jelly. You might also want to try that Lime plum juice, Barley Drinks and Grass Jelly as they are local favorites. I always buy those drinks on the hawker center in Singapore and it taste the same, oh yaayyy.

Thank you so much @foodblogsmedia and Killiney Kopitiam at Central Park for organising the event, I really enjoyed the feast and can not wait to go back.

Who doesn't know Newtown? The bohemian-like suburb with great stores along the main road. From indie clothing labels, indie bookshops, thrift stores and lots of murals. Here is also where the Mapo Gelato located, few minutes walk from the station.

Why it called Mapo? It turned out the name this Italian Gelato is an abbreviation from owner's favorite fruits in Italian which are Mandarino and Pompelmo, or in English is Mandarin and Grapefruit. Mapo is also coincidentally (or not :P) as the abbreviation of the name of the owner, Matteo Pochintesta (don't let him know that I tell you this, hahaha).

Matteo and Emanuela make the gelato in-store with fresh and natural ingredients. The simplicity of the store really warm you up whenever you come inside. During my visit they serve at least 15 different flavours with 7 seasonal flavours. You can check on their menu whether it is Vegan, Organic, Fat Free, Lactose fee, Nuts Free or Gluten Free or you can just tell them you preference and they will happily inform you.

What I like the most from this gelato is actually the taste. It is not overly sweet like any other gelato and when you try it, you will know that it made from fresh ingredients. The most favourite one are Caramello al Sale (Salted Caramel) and Pistachio di Sicilia (Sicilian Pistachio). The price range is from $5.50 for one scoop up to $29.50 for 1.5 litre tub.

We tried the mix of Sicilian Pistachio and Red Plum plus Salted Caramel and Gianduja. From those four flavours, my favourite one is Gianduja which made from single origin Ecuadorian Chocolate and Piedmont Hazelnuts, they even put it "aka Like Nutella, but better" oh the menu list. Couldn't agree more.

So shall we do some Gelato date to Mapo, now?
